A Special Item Number, or SIN, is the code GSA uses to organize what schedule holders sell. Federal buyers search by SIN, and eBuy requests are sent by SIN. Pick the wrong ones and the right buyers never see you.
What a SIN does for you
- Visibility: buyers filter eLibrary and Advantage! by SIN.
- eBuy access: you see only the requests posted to SINs you hold.
- Scope: it defines what you are approved to sell under the contract.
Examples
| SIN | General area |
|---|---|
| 541611 | Management, financial consulting, acquisition and program management support |
| 54151S | Information technology professional services |
| 541330ENG | Engineering services |
These are examples only. GSA revises SIN structures, so confirm current codes in the solicitation.
How to choose
Start from your real revenue
List the products or services you already sell commercially, and what each generates.
Match to SIN descriptions
Read each SIN's scope. Your offering should sit comfortably within it, not stretch it.
Check evidence
For each SIN, GSA wants proof: experience narratives, sample invoices, and references. If you cannot support it, save it for later.
Look at demand
Search eBuy activity and competitors' listings by SIN. A SIN with steady demand is worth more than a prestigious but quiet one.
Mind the cost
Each SIN adds documentation. Our flat fee includes up to three, and additional SINs can be added later through a modification.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a SIN because it sounds impressive rather than because you deliver it
- Adding too many at once, weakening the whole package
- Overlooking a SIN in a nearby category where your competitors are winning
