Renewal, options, and the 20-year renewal
A MAS contract can last twenty years, but only if you keep renewing it on time. Plan the handoffs so there is never a gap.
How the contract term works
A MAS contract starts with a five-year base period followed by up to three five-year option periods, for a maximum of twenty years. Exercising each option requires a short modification, and GSA expects you to be compliant with sales, reporting, and pricing terms to earn it. The 20-year renewal
When the final option ends, the contract cannot be extended further. GSA's answer is a request to hold a continuous contract: you submit a new offer that replicates your current contract. For a while you will hold two contracts at the same time. Once your active items are moved to the new contract, the old one is cancelled and the new one carries on, with its own five-year base and three options, as long as you stay compliant.
Timing is the whole game. Many firms assume they must wait until the last six months. You do not. You can apply for the new contract at any time, and we recommend starting around year 18 or 19. That leaves roughly 12 to 14 months on the old contract, usually enough for at least six months of overlap.
What can go wrong if you wait
- The contract expires before the new one is in place, and orders and visibility stop.
- GSA may in some cases ask you to apply for an entirely new schedule, which means repeating the whole process.
Streamlined vs. standard renewal
If your new offer is identical to what is currently awarded, a streamlined path can apply. Any change to pricing, terms, or conditions removes that eligibility, and the offer is evaluated more fully. Because of this, we review your current terms, whether an identical offer is possible, and how much time is left before we quote.
